Owner's Representative for Large Building Projects

Owner's Representative for Large Building Projects

Large building projects are incredibly expensive, complex, and very
risky. Owners are required to make big decisions for these large
projects related to complex issues, that are beyond their scope of
experience and expertise which are not typically in the project owners
plan for the building.

Typically, they may involve schedule changes, which would require
decisions on financial budgets. They would need to collect in-depth
data that would require interpreting for their construction teams and
designers of the building. This type of scenario would require answers.

This is where the owner's representative would be required. A project
planning and delivery "owner's representative" expert, who knows how to
navigate and negotiate successfully in the complex process of a
building projects. The result would be risk reduction and unnecessary
expenses for the project.

An owner's representative can help prepare and ultimately lead a
collaboration between the owner, builder, and architect for the
project's successful completion. Some companies have been through the
ropes on large projects and don't need an owner's representative, but
in the larger picture, it is good idea to have an owner's
representative on-site.

An owner's representative guides the owner through the decision-making
process of the project. They are on the owners side and would advise
them on information that comes in from the project. A great owner's
representative will work well with all parties involved and deliver the
project on time and under budget!

By not having an owner's representative handle your project and let
the architect and builder do it could be risky. They are professionals
and good at what they do individually (design and construction), but
may not be great at the overall view of the projects direction.

Custom Gift Wrap – Promoting Your Brand

With retail chain stores on every high street, there's never been a
more important time for independent retailers to find ways to promote
their own brand. However, whether you have one store or five hundred
stores your brand is central to everything you do to promote your
business.

A growing trend among retailers is to offer a gift wrapping
service. This is true both in the physical world and also with
retailing on the internet. It is possible to buy a huge range of stock
gift wrap papers. But, this has its disadvantages. Not only is it
almost impossible to match your company's corporate colours, but with
changing trends, a paper chosen today could be out of stock tomorrow.

A better solution for gift wrapping is to have your own gift wrap
paper custom printed. A simple idea would be to have your logo repeated
to make an overall pattern using your corporate colours. This will work
well with a particularly good design. A much better idea would be to
commission some bespoke illustrations that either reflect your store's
product range or possibly a seasonal theme. The company logo can be
included, but with more subtlety. This way you can maintain your
corporate brand whilst offering the recipient of the gift something
much more appealing.

Remember to give some thought to whether you are going to include
ribbons and bows when choosing your design theme and colours. Gift wrap
ribbons and bows will add the finishing touch to any gift. Do think
about how the fully gift wrapped present is to be packaged for posting
if you are planning to gift wrap mail order items. You would most
likely include the gift wrap materials along with the product for
wrapping by the gift giver, unless you are sending the gift directly to
the recipient.

Custom Gift Wrap Design and Print

There are printers who specialise in wrapping paper printing. The
same is true of designers. Initially you will need to talk to someone
who understands the different processes involved and being armed with
sufficient information at the beginning will help.

1. Do you require rolls or sheets?

2. What is your preferred paper weight? eg. 60g., 70g., 80g., 90g.

3. Paper quality? Kraft, Varnished, Metallic.

4. Paper size? Length and width of rolls or sheets.

5. Paper finish? Matt or Varnished.

6. Quantity of sheets or rolls?

7. Colours in design? Standard 1-4 colours, Pantones.

8. Type of printing? Flexo, Gravure, Litho.

9. Any special effects? Metal foil, spot varnish.

The quantity and paper finish required will very quickly dictate
what is possible and what is not for your budget. The budget will be
dependent on the value of the gift, assuming you won't be charging for
a branded gift wrap service. There are three types of printing used to
print wrapping paper. These are Flexography, Gravure and Litho
printing.

Printing wrapping paper rolls using Flexography. For simple designs
in 1 or 2 colours the minimum quantity is approximately 6 to 12 rolls
per design. Roll widths are typically from 30cm to 100cm and have a
roll length of 250m. Rolls can be cut and supplied as gift wrap sheets.

Printing wrapping paper rolls using Gravure printing. Minimum
quantities are often referred to by weights from 100kg for a single
colour and up to 1000kg minimum for 4 colour printing per design. Roll
widths are from 30cm to 100cm and in roll lengths of 250m.

A weight of 100Kg is equivalent to approximately 15 to 25 rolls,
depending on the paper weight and roll width. These 250m counter rolls
can also be cut and supplied as gift wrap sheets or converted into
consumer rolls. Consumer roll lengths are specified by the customer and
typically vary from 1m to 5m in length.

Printing wrapping paper using Litho printing. Gift wrapping paper
is relatively thin, 60-90g, and not many printers like to put such thin
paper through their litho printing presses. Some will print on thicker
paper. This isn't normally recommended as it makes wrapping gifts more
difficult. A 90g matt white paper provides an ideal base for printing
gift wrap designs and is thick enough for litho printing if you can
find a supplier that will do it. The most popular sheet size is 500m x
700mm or very close, depending on the printing press and country of
supply. Typical minimum quantity is 1000 sheets per design.

There are definite advantages to printing litho. With low print
runs possible and high quality multi-colour printing, the starting
price for being able to print multiple designs is kept low. With some
creativity a wonderful selection of designs is possible while including
a central branded look.

5 Ways To Increase Your Affiliate Sales

There are certain ways of doing anything. When it comes to affiliate
marketing in particular, you can choose to do it half-heartedly or you
can go all-out and do it right. Work your affiliate programs by
slamming a ton of banners on a page and waiting for the money to roll
in is both a waste of your time and a disservice to the affiliate
program owner you're working for. You may as well not even do it.

Work your affiliate programs like they actually mean something to
you and your business; with all your knowledge and effort, and you're
going to be on the road to collecting a good deal of commissions. Just
like anything, there are ways of doing things that are going to prove
to your web site or blog visitors that you are an expert at what you're
taking about. Use your expertise about the product you're promoting and
speak to them as a friend. After all, PRE-Selling a product is nothing
more than being able to articulate how wonderful something is to
someone else, as one trusted friend to another. It's not a hard thing
to learn, but is a skill you must master that is not being taught as
widely as it needs to be. People want to be able to trust others.
Cynicism runs rampant in the Internet marketing world. There are far
too many scammers out there making us good guys look bad. You primary
job is to be that one voice crying out in the wilderness that changes
that cynicism to trust. It's about being real and not a salesman.
People can smell a salesman a mile away and they stink.

Here are 5 ways to work your affiliate marketing programs as an expert:

1. PRE-Sell - Find your own voice. Don't write like everyone else.
You do not want to come off as just another carbon-copy salesman. You
need to convey to your visitors that you care about them (it helps if
you do). You need to have a passion to truly help other people. That
can be understood in how you write. Sincerity is a trait sorely lacking
in Internet marketing. You need to learn the mandatory skill of writing
to PRE-Sell. Your job is to PRE-Sell the product and it is the job of
the stores' landing pages to close the sale. Tell your visitors of your
experiences and share stories. People appreciate being spoken to as an
old friend sitting around the dining room table with a cup of coffee.
Which lead to....

2. Have Product Experience - Whenever possible, own the product or
work with the service you're promoting. This allows you to speak as
that expert with first-hand experience. Your passion for that fantastic
product will shine through. You want your readers to get as excited as
your are about the product. You're not going to want to promote
something that isn't any good, no matter how high the commissions,
right? Um....right?? This can only come by owner the product yourself.
Plus, you'll wind up with something really cool! ;)

3. Follow Your Niche - If you're web site or blog that has to do
with cellular phones, don't join and promote an affiliate program for
riding lawnmowers. You are not going to get your most wanted response
that way, which is the click. Keep your subject matter and your
affiliate programs in line with one another.

4. Deep Link - Let's use the cell phone scenario and say that
you've got a page or a blog entry about the Apple iPhone and you have
an affiliate association with a large on-line cell phone store. When
you're figuring out which of their affiliate text links, banners or
other creative to use, make sure you are able to deep link to the page
or pages about Apple iPhones. You want to put your potential customer
where they want to be. Don't just link to the cell phone stores home
page. That is like leading them out into the woods and then dumping
them. Don't make them search for that Apple iPhone information, lead
them directly to it via your deep-linking affiliate link. That way will
convert much better for you.

5. Work with The Affiliate Program Owners - They want to sell their
products as much as you do. Even more. Don't be afraid to contact them
and voice your concerns, opinions and needs. Any affiliate program that
is worth promoting will welcome your input. They will want to work with
you. You'll be able to tell who is worth working with and who is not.
Do they have a large selection of creative to use? Do they offer
attractive commission payouts (I tend not to take anything that pays
out 2% of a sale or less) and long-term cookies? Do they allow deep
linking with a bunch of pages to choose from? Is their affiliate
program control center attractive and easy to use? Do they keep you
informed via email about upcoming promotions and ways to help you make
better conversions? If all that is being done, you should be working
with them as best you can. They are obviously putting their best foot
forward for you and their customers. If not, drop them and move on.
They should always be there to help you in any way they can.

There you have it. Those are a few of the ways to work an affiliate
program for all it's worth. If you want the money (a no-brainer), learn
all you can, work hard, work smart and don't give up. Your failure or
success is entirely dependent on you. Here's to your success!

Free Classified Ads: Some of the Finer Points!

Free classified ads are very much the same online vs. offline. The
biggest difference is the amount of space you have to place your ad in.
In an offline publication, you are normally using abbreviations and
have room for an ad with 16 to 24 words. In online advertising,
classified directories normally tend to give the advertiser a great
deal more space, often as much as a couple of short paragraphs, and
that is on the free services. In a paid classified service, the space
allocated can be as much as a full page or more.

Years ago, classified advertising online was a very popular means
of driving free website traffic to your website, but it seemed to die
out in the late nineties. Or at least the fad of free classified ads
seemed to fade away. However, if you do a keyword search on Google for
"Free Classified Ads" you will get results of 1,110,000 websites using
the term Free Classified Ads. And if you do a broad search without the
"---" the results are a staggering 14,600,000. I am guessing that the
only thing that faded away in the late ninties was my interest in using
free classified ads.

There are hundreds of free classified ad software programs out
there should you wish to include a free classified ads section on your
website. Should that be your decision, you may check out eclassifieds
dot net, the-classified-connection dot com or theadnet dot com forward
slash webmaster dot htm.

Considering that there are thousands of websites that run free
classified ad sections, it's easy to see how you could spend all of
your spare time just submitting your ads to these sites. There is only
one such site that holds the Alexa ranking and PR rating that I would
encourage you to submit manually to. The most prolific of all
Classified Directories is one most people have familiarity with.
CraigsList.org has weathered the storms over the years and is now one
of the most visited websites in the world. With an Alexa ranking of 46,
it's no wonder that Ebay has purchased a third of Craigslist.com for
big bucks.

And Craigslist.com has a Google page rank of 8 (PR 8): what that
means is that advertising on craigslist.com will give you a back link
to your website from a high PR level website. Google loves this sort of
link from another site. And there are actually ebooks out there that
will instruct you on just the right ways to utilize craigslist.com to
enhance your free website promotion techniques.

Craigslist is certainly not the only classified ad site you cna
submit your ad to. However, unless you have tons of free time on your
hands every week, I would suggest that you consider locating Classified
Ad Submission Software. With this type of software your ad will
iterally be placed into thousands of Free Classified Ad sites. Do a
keyword search for "Classified Ads Submissions Software" and you will
see ads that claim you can send your ad into over 50,000 classified ad
sites with the simple push of a button.

If you select the right software having the proper features, you
will save yourself an immeasureable amount of time in the management,
organization and submissions of your free classified ads. You will be
able to decide exactly where you want you ads to appear. Controling the
ability to manage, organize and control where your free classified ads
are placed opens up many options for you to tailor your ad campaigns.
The good proframs will also automate the submissions to those sites
that require a login and password to access the free classified ads
section.

You will have to make the decision yourself whether or not you will
use Classified ads Submissions as a part of your Internet Marketing
arsenal. I can tell you this; Free Classified ads are considered a
powerful advertising medium on the Internet. Advertise4rs can reach
more potential customers and you can point your ads to virtually
anywhere you want them to go be it a squeeze page, a larger ad, or your
sales page, as it is just not practical to submit your ads to thousands
of Free Classifeid ad sites.

Good luck in you free classified ads submissions. I trust you will
make the right decision as to whcih software to choose. Remember to do
a keyword search on Google for "Classified Ads Submissions Software"
and seriously take a look at the choices you have.

The 3 New Strategies for Marketing Viral Success

In the b.i. days (before the internet), the success of a mom and pop
store depended, among other things, on the big boys of industry. Once
they came to town and set up shop, there was no more mom and pop. They
were driven out of business by the sheer volume of the mega companies'
advertising and capital. Not a pretty site.

The internet has gone a long way to reviving the mom and pop industry.
It affords many small businesses the opportunity to compete by using
simple cost effective techniques repeated on a continuous basis. One of
the techniques is viral marketing commonly referred to as word of
mouth.

In the old days viral marketing for small business owners had limited
appeal. Yes they could be successful in that particular city, town or
even region but it's still nothing compared to the global word of mouth
that business owners can tap into right now thanks to the internet.
Once you launch your viral marketing campaign, it requires very little
follow up on your part and even this has been taken a step further with
the emergence of Web 2.0.

Here are some new ways to get the best out of your viral marketing:

1. The Small Report.

There have been some excellent ebooks on the internet chock full of
good information but let's face it: many people are not going to read
them due to the length. Enter the small report. Putting together a five
to ten page report can be done in no time. The same goes for reading
it. We suffer from information overload in this day and age so giving
people useful information in smaller quantities makes sense.

Find a hot topic and write several articles on it. Place the articles
in a pdf file with your name and contact information branded on the
report. Tell readers they are free to distribute your report as long as
they do not alter it in any way. Then advertise your report in forums
on your website and anywhere else you can think of. People want
information fast and utilizing small reports is a good way to give them
exactly that. It's also a good start to making money from your viral
campaign.

2. Video

In 2005, Kevin McCarthy one of the pioneers of online marketing
predicted that within a year there would be an explosion of online
video. Prediction accomplished. The internet is at the dawning of the
video revolution. It is becoming easier and easier to make a video and
upload it to places like You Tube or Google Video. In fact Google
bought You Tube late last year for 1.65 billion dollars. That's a good
indicator of how things are going.

Like the small report, try to keep your video brief and to the point.
While people would rather watch than read, you still don't want to
overload them. The point of a using a viral video (like reports) for
your business is to give visitors useful information but just enough.
In the end you want them to get more information by going to your
website

3. Folksonomies

Wikipedia defines folksonomy as "a user-generated taxonomy used to
categorize and retrieve web content such as Web pages, photographs and
Web links". In plain english what they are referring to is tagging; a
way to not only retrieve information you want but more importantly to
share that information with others. Tagging is nothing more than
keywords specifically related to bookmarking social sites like Digg,
Technorati or Delicious.

As an example let's say you join Technorati. You then make a video, tag
it with the keyword phrase "funny online video" and upload it to your
account. Now all individuals within the Technorati community will be
able to access your video when they type in that particular keyword.
This is very powerful. Tag viral and bookmarking social can put you in
front of a large audience immediately.

No matter how new the strategies keep in mind if you want your viral
marketing to truly take off then make sure its free. Charging money for
your report or video will guarantee you a limited appeal. Free is a
powerful psychological trigger for many of us so use it. Also make sure
you are providing quality. No one is going to be in a hurry to pass
around below average information.

The internet has in many ways leveled the playing field. Just stay
alert to any new innovations and be ready to incorporate them into your
internet web site marketing strategy. A smart viral marketing campaign
can make any small business successful.

Once upon a time...

We had the likes of Leo Burnett, David Ogilvy et al. And they were the keepers of the flame of advertising.

Nowadays no aspect of advertising is as badly served as advertising
itself. Where to day are the advertising voices that ring out as
intelligent, passionate, current, and, more importantly, critical of
current advertising practices?

Can you, for one moment, even imagine David Ogilvy not giving
sarcastic comment to some of what passes for advertising these days -
especially the use of the new technology?

Once upon a time we had an excellent heritage of critical writing
on advertising. Unfortunately to day no one speaks with any authority
either for or against advertising.

In our current trade press the lexicon of adjectives used by critics of advertising is...zilch...nada...nothing!

Even worse, the banality of what passes for intelligent commentary
on all aspects of marketing/advertising is simply that - banal!

The current crop of writers have forgotten that their first calling
is to write readable, intelligent and amusing articles. Because like
everything else advertising needs strong criticism, it needs that to
keep advertising strong and innovative. Bad advertising, and there
happens to be a lot of it around these days, drives out good
advertising unless there is someone to stop it.

The current crop of writers and what they have to say about
advertising is growing in irrelevance. Sometimes I feel that, when
reading the marketing/advertising/media press that they have no idea
who they are writing for. Sadly, a myopic tunnel vision is bought to
bear on the subject currently in vogue - in this instance, Web 2.0.

However what is really worrying is the fact that, in the instance
of Web 2.0, there is no debate as to the suitability of Web 2.0 as an
advertising medium, there is no debate as to the claims of it being
accountable. Which, by the way, it isn't, it is too susceptible to all
types of fraud and manipulation!

And there is absolutely no discussion on the huge and growing
problem of clutter. Whether it's emerging digital platforms or the
nooks and crannies in an ever increasing buyable physical world - from
dry-cleaning bags, coffee cups, door hangers and even houses. The simple
fact of the matter is that clutter is leading to more clutter.

So if clutter is such a problem, why isn't there a clear, unified
way of thinking out a way to reduce it? And that perhaps a good debate
and discussion within the marketing/Media press could contribute, but
no, no critics within the trade have emerged to courageously tackle
this huge and growing problem!

Added to this is the headlong, unquestioning rush into all forms of
new media. Like, for example, cellphone (mobile) advertising.

A much more critical stance would have questioned the very thought of advertising on mobile 'phones.

Now the obvious has been confirmed, marketers' new-found fondness
for cellphone advertising is not an enthusiam universally shared by
consumers.

When 4,000 adults were asked about different forms of mobile phone
ads the overwhelming majority of respondents found them "not
accepatable at all"!

"My new gizmo has gone up in smoke but I can't face ringing yet
another call centre"...that was the headline in a recent edition of The
Tomes of London, as if in vindication of what I am trying to say here.
"Customer satisfaction plumbs the depths as a survey suggests that we
are fed up with poor servicesstates the Times.

I can guarantee that there will be no discussion/debate/criticism of that little article in the trade press!

Here I will take this opportunity to announce the fact that we are
trying ourselves to (partially)address the problem of reader
satisfaction/ddissatisfaction. On our blogsite (http://effectiveaccountablecommunication.blogsite.com)
we have a short questionaire with a couple of questions and multiple
choice answers. Please take the time to visit and provide us with your
opinions...it will help us all in the future. Thank you so much in
anticipation.

Writing Your Resource Box To Make More People Click

The internet is the information super-highway, this phrase has been
used so many times that it could be nominated for the "Internet
Cliché Award". People that go to the internet are subdivided
into groups, but generally, they are out to search for information.
Whether for gaming, business, fun or anything else, the internet
provides us with information that has proved to be very beneficial.

In recent years many people have learned the secrets of Search Engine
Optimization. More and more sites have seen the positive effects that
articles have had for the traffic of their sites. Some have even
created sites devoted entirely to providing articles. Website visitors
can read the articles and get links to lead to many other sites that
are related to the topics and subjects of those articles.

For example, the sites may feature many articles about a whole lot of
topics. As a website visitor reads the articles they have searched for,
at the end of the article they can find a resource box that links them
to the site that has submitted the article. Of course the article would
be in relation to the site. Lets say if the article is about rotating
tires, the resource box may lead to a link to a site that sells tires
or car parts.

A resource box is what you usually find at the end of an article. It
contains the name of the author, a brief description of the author, a
brief description of the sponsoring site and a link. If a reader likes
what they read, they would have the tendency to find out where the
article came from to read more. The resource box will be their link to
the source of the article and this will entice them to go to the site
and do some more reading or research for the subject or topic they are
interested in.

But like the article itself, the resource box must also be eye-catching
to demand the attention and interest of the reader. While the resource
box encompasses only a small space, providing the right keywords and
content for your resource box will provide more encouragement for the
reader to go to your site.

Now we know what resource boxes are, what are the benefits of having a
good resource box? Mainly its driving traffic to your site. Many sites
would allow articles to be placed in their sites because they can make
use of the articles to fill their pages. They also get affiliation with
other sites that can be beneficial for them as well. For the sponsoring
site, when you get people to click on your resource box, you generate
traffic that can be counted upon as potential customers.

So what would be good content for your resource box? Basically it is
keywords, learning about the popular keywords that people are searching
for. There are many tools you can find on the internet that can help
you in determining what keywords to use. Good Keywords is a free tool
you can get at http://www.softnik.com
to determine how much a particular term is searched for. Then, check if
people are buying in relation to these keywords by checking how much
people are bidding on these keywords. You can check this at http://www.overture.com and http://adwords.google.com

Resource boxes can also make use of all the creativity it can get. You
only get a small space for your resource box so you better make the
most of it. Try to catch the attention of your reader with resource box
content that can make them give a second look. Unlike TV ads, you
don’t have visual aids to drive your point home. But you do have
the power of imagination of a reader. With the right content, you can
make them think and become interested.

Another tip is to use keywords that are related to your site. Do not
mislead your potential website visitors. Build your credibility so that
more people would get enticed to visit your site and browse what you
have to offer. Make the people click your resource box by providing
resource box content that makes a lasting impression. You only get one
chance to wow them and hundreds of chances to repulse them.

Never underestimate the power of the resource box. It may be small in
size, but it will provide a huge aid in driving traffic to your site. A
boring resource box will never get the job done. Be fun and creative
but at the same time show that you have a great deal to offer.

The Three Most Common Affiliate Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

By now I'm sure you have realized that affiliate marketing is one of
the most effective and powerful ways is of earning some money online.
Affiliate programs give everybody a chance to make a profit through the
Internet. Since they are easy to join, implement and pay a commission
on a regular basis, more an more people are now willing in this
business.

But like with all businesses, there are countless pitfalls in the
affiliate marketing business as well. Making some of the most common
mistakes will result in decreasing everyday profits for the marketers.
That is why you should avoid them now than be regretful in the later.

First Mistake: Selecting the wrong affiliate program.

Logically, many people want to earn affiliate marketing commission as
fast as possible. By rushing through the selection stage, they tend to
choose a bandwagon product. These are products that the program thinks
is "hot". They choose the product that is in demand without actually
considering if the product appeals to them. In many cases, this is not
a very wise move obviously.

Instead of doing this, try top choose a product in which you are truly
interested in. For your internet venture to succeed, you should take
some time to plan and decide your action plan.

Choose a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that
product to see if they are in demand. Promoting a product you are more
passionate about is easier than promoting one only for the sake of
cashing in.

Second mistake: Not buying the product or using the service.

When you decide to be an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively
and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers.
For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay that certain
product and service to the customers. It may be difficult for you to do
this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you
probably will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will
also fail to create a desire in your customers to avail any of what you
are offering.

The best thing to do is to try the product or service personally first
before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering
what it promises. After you have done this, you are one of the credible
and satisfied customers aware of it's advantages and disadvantages.
People will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in you and this
will trigger them to try them out for themselves.

Mistake number 3: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Because affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might feel the
temptation to join various affiliate programs to try and maximize the
commissions you will be getting. You also may think that there is
nothing wrong and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate
programs.

This may be true, it is a great way to have multiple sources of income.
However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all
at the same time will cause you to sabotage yourself. It will prevent
you from concentrating on each one of them properly.

The result? The true potential of your affiliate program is not reached
and the income generated will not be as generous as you initially
thought it would. The best way to achieve excellent result is by
joining only one solid program that pays a 40% commission at least.
Give it your best effort by promoting the product or service
enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is already making a
reasonable profit, then maybe you can now join another affiliate
program.

The best technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no
need to rush into anything, especially with affiliate marketing. With
the way things are going, the future is looking real bright and it
seems affiliate marketing will be around for a long time.

A lot of affiliate marketers makes these mistakes and are paying dearly
for their actions. Do not fall into the same situation they have been
in, try to do whatever possible to avoid making the same mistakes.

Time is the key. Take the time to analyze your marketing strategy and
check if you are on the right track. If done properly, you will be able
to maximize your affiliate marketing program's potential and earn
higher profits.

Writing Effective Benefits Statements

How to turn features into compelling benefits that matter to customers

One of the most common trap the marketing folks get into when working
on technical products is focusing on the features of a product rather
than the benefits to the end user. Features are great - we all want to
know what is in a product and want to be able to compare it to other
products. But at the same time there are many features that, while the
benefits may be obvious to the Marketer or Product Manager working on
them, may leave potential customers wondering why they matter.

Here's an example. Back when I was the Product Manager for the
Human Interface for the MacOS at Apple, the company would routinely
release new technologies with each operating system release. Since many
of these technologies were very "cool" by technology standards they
would get talked about as feature. A few examples include QuickDraw GX
and QuickTime.

Now for those of us who are more technical geeks, or for those who
followed what Apple was doing we immediately understood what Apple
meant when they said "includes the new QuickDraw GX graphics and
printing architecture and version 2.0 of QuickTime". But for the other
99.999% of the world, stating some benefits would have answered the age
old question of "So why should I care" (and "So why should I upgrade").

When writing effective benefits statements think of the phrase
"Which means that you can". What do I mean by this? To give you an idea
I'll use the 280 Group as an example (this is the part of the article
where we do the shameless self-promotion).

One of the "Features" that we promote is that we provide "Hand
Picked Marketing & Product Management Consultants and Contractors".
On its own you might say "So What?", but here's the benefit statement.

FEATURE:

"Hand Picked Marketing & Product Management Consultants and Contractors…"

Which means that you can…

BENEFIT

"…save the time and hassle of doing the work yourself to find a qualified consultant, check their references, etc."

Here's another example:

FEATURE:

"Seasoned Professional and Experienced Consultants…"

Which means that you can…

BENEFIT

"…rest assured that you will have a committed and
professional resource to see the project all the way through and get
excellent results."

The "Which means that you can" phrase helps bring out the real
value to your customers. They don't care about technology or features
if there isn't an associated benefit to them. This may seem like
Marketing 101, but it is amazing how many people neglect this when
writing their marketing content.

To wrap up, let's go back to the Apple example. Now if I told you
that you should upgrade to the newest version of the MacOS because
you'll get QuickTime 2.0, which means that can watch movies on your
computer that are twice as big and are much higher quality, would you
be a little more prone to want to upgrade?

Hidden Costs of Offshoring

The media is full of reports of tech companies going offshore for their
software development and support capabilities. While this is a real
phenomenon that is happening, and the dollar cost savings can be
compelling, there are several downsides that don't seem to be brought
up very often. These can have a tremendously detrimental impact on a
company's products and brands, and without careful consideration can
lead to shortsighted decisions that ultimately take down a company.

Here are a few of the considerations:

1.) You may stifle and inhibit your product efforts

Truly great products are created by innovative engineering teams
that work very closely with Product Managers and other groups in a
company. As a Product Management professional I've worked with some
great teams that have delivered some incredible products. Products like
these aren't something you can simply write a spec for, deliver it to
engineers overseas, and get something exceptional back. Sure, for
simple and VERY straightforward coding work you can farm it out. But if
you want to create truly breakthrough products you need a team that has
great ideas AND that works closely with your Product Management folks
to ensure customer needs are being met. The best situation is where you
get a team that looks at the MRD (Market Requirements Document) and
figures out a way to deliver far more than what it calls for in a way
that Product Management could never have thought up.

2.) Your brand and customer relationships may suffer

The cost of losing a customer and ruining your brand as a result of
offshoring can be very high. Consider this example. My wife Sarah (VP
of Sales for the 280 Group) recently had a software problem and
contacted technical support for a well-known brand name product. She
ended up exchanging email five or six times with them. After the second
message it became painfully obvious that the person on the other end
didn't speak English very well, and that they had little chance of even
understanding the problem let alone solving it.

Now if this was an isolated incident it would be one thing, but
this company gave me the exact same lack of service when I had a
different problem. Sure, they saved a lot by having the support handled
by someone in India. But now that they've lost us as customers, the
question is, how much are they going to have to spend to attempt to win
us back?

Smart companies are realizing this - that's why Dell pulled their India
tech support efforts recently. The long-term value of a customer is FAR
higher than any short-term savings they can realize by having someone
less-expensive answering support questions.

3.) Managing offshore development can take a huge toll.

A friend of mine recently returned from a trip India where he is
managing an engineering team and was investigating finding new
facilities. He goes there about once a quarter. During this trip he got
violently ill, and suffered the usual jet lag and loss of personal time
when travelling. Upon returning he informed his boss of the progress,
and was told that he needed to return again in 2 weeks to finalize the
deal on the office space and make sure the team was on track.

The cost of this? Well, I can tell you that if he gets the chance to
work for a different company where he doesn't have to travel he'll be
the first to jump ship.

Incidentally, he mentioned that they are having problems with attrition
of staff in their India office, and that office space is no longer as
cheap and widely available as before. While it had been easy and cheap
to offshore two years ago, it had become more complicated and
time-consuming recently.

4.) Lack of accountability

I'm working with a team that is remote right now for a client.
Every day we have a team meeting conference call and people call in
from multiple sites. Though good in theory, we end up having to repeat
many things that are said because the phone lines are questionable.
Additionally many people skip the meeting, or delay us because they
don't have the project files to look at when we put them up on the
projector. I also suspect that a good part of the team is doing work
(or other things) on their computer while on the phone, since when they
are asked a question it is clear they haven't been listening.

There is something to be said for making your team show up in
person, look you in the eye when you are having a difficult discussion
about schedules and features, and not be able to hide their facial
expressions behind a phone line. True accountability makes for great
product teams.

THE BOTTOM LINE

One has to wonder, when the laws of supply and demand begin to
catch up with the situation, and the hidden costs of offshoring begin
to become more apparent, will companies come to regret their
cost-conscious post-bubble offshoring choices?

Tag Lines Tell A Tale of One's Occupations

"What do you do?"

In our society this is the first question we’re asked, after
"What is your name?" The real question is: “How do you answer
this question?”

Do you tell people your title: clerk, programmer, driver, teacher,
sales rep or receptionist — or do you answer more descriptively?

Too many people respond to this question with a bland,
unimaginative job title or standard industry classification (SIC) code.
B-O-R-I-N-G! To set yourself apart from the crowd, cast your profession
in its most ennobling light and focus on the benefits of your work as
they accrue to others!

Consider Ruth Blumert Walker, longtime receptionist for the
Oakland, California law firm of DONAHUE, GALLAGHER, WOODS AND WOOD.
When asked her occupation, Blumert proudly proclaims “I’m
the Director of First Impressions." Indeed she is!

Walker knows that people dread going to a law firm. They're usually
there because of a problem and their visit is costly to boot. Walker
understands the key role she plays in their experience, and her moniker
showcases the power she possesses to make a difference.

Why not replace your official title or occupation with a more
descriptive tag line? An effective "tag line" casts your skills in an
ennobling light, sharing pride in your chosen profession. People
respond affirmatively when you tantalize and enthrall them with an
interesting or compelling tag line. Furthermore, you’re sending a
message you have a strong sense of who you are and what you do and are
thus deemed more employable.

Consider the following:

• The residential realtor who describes herself as "putting
people into their dream home." What a powerful statement she is making.

• The commercial credit specialist who smiles and tells strangers who ask that he is "giving credit where credit is due."

• A commercial airline pilot informs people who ask that she
is “shrinking the globe to reunite families and loved
ones.”

• A midwife proudly proclaims that she is “bringing new life into this world.”

In each case these professionals are sharing some of the magic of
their profession with their listeners. And listeners respond
accordingly. It’s a powerful conversation opener, whether in a
networking event, a job interview or just during casual conversation

Whatever your profession, you can create a "tag" line to showcase the results of your work and cast it in an ennobling light.

Here are some more examples to stimulate your creative juices:

• The Internal Revenue Service agent who tells people who ask that he's a "government fundraiser.”

• The Gardener tells people "I Turn the World Green. . .one garden at a time."

• The Dietitian says "I Teach People How to Behave in Front of Food."

• The Voice Coach who proclaims she "Gives Voice to the Timid."

• The Telephone Customer Service Representative (CSR) who tells people she "has a special calling.”

• The Plantronics headset saleswoman who says she helps people "Use their head… not their hands. "

• The photographer who “Gets paid to shoot people for a living.”

• The executive assistant who calls herself the “Presidential Gatekeeper”

• And even the motivational speaker, Craig Harrison, who tells
people he's "a motivational magician who turns aspirations into
achievements."

It's your turn! Look anew at your occupation or profession and
identify its outcome or the effect its commission has on people. Now
create a descriptive tag line to excite others about what you do, and
what it can do for them!

Use the power of language to create a compelling tag line that
gives you pride and infuses others with excitement too. Tag, you're IT!

Mobile Search Marketing - Get A Head Start On Your Competitors.

The mobile search market is still in its infancy and many advertisers
are taking a 'wait and see' approach. This lack of competition in the
mobile search space surely presents an opportunity for businesses to
get a head start on their competitors.

While most advertisers are reluctant to commit, it is relatively
straightforward to get positioned well in the natural search listings
of the mobile search engines, and PPC programme click costs are still
comparatively low. So, how do you start to market your business on the
mobile web?

The good news is that a mobile search marketing campaign is relatively
simple to set up. But before you can promote your website to the mobile
search market you need to ensure that it is compatible with mobile
screens, or you need a specifically designed site in a mobile ready
format such as XHTML, WML, or iMode.

The reality is that most sites will be difficult to adapt to small
mobile screens and will not have the simplified functionality that is
required by mobile users, so a dedicated mobile site is preferable.
Fortunately, mobile sites are relatively cheap and quick to build. You
can also register a .mobi domain so that users (and search engines)
will know that your site is fully mobile compatible.

Once you have your site established, accessing the mobile search
market is now quick, easy and cost effective with both Google and Yahoo
offering the ability to place PPC text ads on their mobile web search
engines. There are also other 3rd party mobile ad network providers
such as Admob (www.admob.com) that allow you to place contextual ads on
selected content.

In addition, mobile websites can be optimised for high visibility in
the natural search results of the mobile websites using conventional
SEO tactics. You can even submit a Google Mobile Sitemap. As few
business have mobile ready websites the competition for valuable screen
real estate is surprisingly light and it is relatively easy to get well
positioned on the mobile search engines.

While the majority of people may not yet be ready to book their
holidays on a mobile handset, there is clearly a business for other
travel and tourism related suppliers like hotels, restaurants, bars,
clubs, golf courses, attractions, tour guides and other local services.

Very few businesses have mobile versions of their websites, so there is
an opportunity to get ahead of your competitors through early exposure
for your products and services on the mobile web.

Viral Marketing 101 - Not Using It Could Kill Your Business!

Creativity.

This is one virtue a site must possess to lead the race in the ruthless
competition in the Internet based business. Because competition and
rivalry abounds, every method of marketing must be employed and
utilized.

It doesn’t matter if you have a killer product or a
professionally designed website, if people don’t know that you
exist, it doesn’t matter, and you are not going to make it big.
Worst of all, your business could just get killed.

While there are so many methods and schemes used by e-commerce
sites today, there are still some of those that can help you with an
extra boost in the popularity ratings. One of these is the so called
Viral Marketing.

While the term Viral easily depicts a virus, a word very much
dreaded by all computer owners, it is not what it seems. You do not
actually use a computer virus to spread your business; not only is that
illegal, you would probably tick off all of your customers (so much for
return sales). Besides, everyone has had enough of all those pop up ads
and spyware anyways.

Viral Marketing Overview

Viral Marketing, also known otherwise as Viral Advertising, is a
marketing technique used to build public awareness of a product or
company. It employs many forms of media to reach out to the public
without actually promoting the product as would a traditional
advertisement. Viral Advertising is much more elegant and stealthy in
its means. By taking on other forms of communication, your marketing
piece could get a person hooked and be obliged or amused to actually
pass it on, with the product or company advertisement along with it.

In a nutshell, companies ride on the idea that if people like the
content of media they will pass it on to their friends and family. They
sponsor the certain media, such as a cool flash game, funny video,
amusing story and such, which one may pass on to another with the
company brand or logo or the products description or any other content
to help promote the company or its product.

Viral marketing has become a popular means of advertising and
marketing because they are relatively low cost. To avoid being tagged
as spam mail, viral marketing counts on the eagerness of one person to
pass the product along. If a person sees the name of the person they
know as the sender, it most likely will not end up in junk mail and,
even better still, may even get read.

Using Viral Marketing to your advantage

The main and foremost advantage of Viral Marketing is that you get
a lot of publicity and public awareness about your site and your
company. You get to generate a flow of traffic that are potential
customers. With a little ingenuity and imagination, plus some
incentives or prizes, you can reach out to a great number of people and
announce your existence. All of this can be done for free (or darn near
close to it!).

Most every company and website is catching on to the efficacy of
Viral Marketing and Advertising. Not using it could kill your business.
Along with other schemes and methods in promoting your site, like
Search Engine Optimization and such, Viral Marketing could easily push
you ahead in the ratings game.

Viral Marketing is a stealthy way to get people to know about you
and your company. You get them to pass your advertisement along. It is
so inexpensive that not doing it could be downright business suicide.
All it takes is a great idea, a good addicting game, a funny story;
many ideas are still out there. Create a gossip or a buzz, many movies
are promoted by using scandals and gossips to make them more popular.
Remember the movie “The Blair Witch Project”? Compare that
with Blair Witch 2 – this time with traditional advertising as
opposed to word of mouth - it was a failure in comparison.

Now it’s your turn to use viral marketing to work wonders for
you. Act now and reap the benefits Viral Marketing will provide for you
and your sales figures.

dreaded by all computer owners, it is not what it seems. You do not
actually use a computer virus to spread your business; not only is that
illegal, you would probably tick off all of your customers (so much for
return sales).

All it takes is a great idea, a good addicting game, a funny story;
many ideas are still out there.
