Build your own laptop

Two words could describe this laptop by themselves, sleek and polished.
Right out the first thing you notice about this laptop is the polished
outside display cover surface, and the lack of any sharp or non-rounded
edges. Opening up the laptop you notice the glossy indicator light
panel, glossy screen, clear plastic covers over the Harmon/Kardon
speakers, and control buttons that blend in with the upper control
panel. Fit and finish has gone a long way to make this laptop stand
out, and it shows on every square inch of this model. One downside to
the glossy finish though is it shows fingerprints, blemishes, and
strange marks if you carry it around even inside a slipcase. My model
after being carried around inside my neoprene case had odd dots on the
glossy finish, along with palm prints covering the top.

The structure and underlying build of this laptop feels much improved
since the last Toshiba model (M45) I owned. The buttons feel very
solid, support under the keyboard is firm, display latches are solid,
and support behind the LCD is excellent. On most models pressing on the
cover behind the LCD will put “waves” onto the screen, on
this model nothing comes through. Flexing resistance could be improved
though, but my Thinkpad spoils me in this area. Chassis flex is minimal
if there at all, letting you pick up the laptop from the edge of the
palm rest without any sagging. Toshiba Satellite A205 Review Linked by LT Hacker

Build your own laptop

Do you want to build your own laptop and you'd like to find out how
it's done and where to do it? If yes, you are reading the right column
as I will discuss how to build a laptop that contains all the features
that are essential to your mobile computing needs. Many computer
shoppers do this not only to get a perfect notebook but to save a
substantial amount of money.

There are various place online where you can build your own laptop.
They're are all different of course. The differences are usually in the
fact that most sites only allow you to build a laptop computer of a
specific brand only. For example, as you'll see below, you could
customize your very own notebook as long as it is a Dell, Apple, Compaq
and so on. The other cases, I have seen are instances where one
retailer allows you to add components into a no-name-brand laptop box
but you can add components from various manufacturers. I have never
tried this and find this to be quite tricky if you are not totally
knowledgeable with laptops and the computer industry.

The best way to build your own laptop on the Internet is to hop over to
Dell.com. Just to make sure that some of the readers do not think that
I am biased, I'll back up my statement by letting you know that the
Dell e-commerce site is the most popular among consumers. Mac users,
don't worry because The Apple Store allows you to build a laptop too
although your options are pretty limited. But, Apple laptops are so
diverse that you will find something that will suit you just fine
without any major need of customization. How-to: Build Your Own Laptop - Steps to take if you want to build a laptop of y Linked by LT Hacker

Gateway E 155C Review

The E155C has a nice design, but forgoes being too gawdy or flashy.
Gateway didn't go with a glossy lid or white keyboard with this Tablet,
like we saw with the Toshiba R400, instead they went with a classy flat
black finish that almost looks grey. Combined with the metallic accents
around the hinge area, this Tablet has a professional and sturdy
appearance.

More importantly the E-155C has a solid build to support that sturdy
look. The high-impact magnesium alloy casing and reinforced hinge help
to make this a sturdy device, but the screen hinge is a little wobbly.
I would have liked a stronger hinge to minimize the screen wobbling,
but this is much tougher to implement on tablets than regular notebooks
that have the advantage of two hinge points.

The curved off edges and overall clean look are just great, I can't see anybody disagreeing with the look the E-155C offers.

The E-155C weighs in at around 4.5 pounds and is 1.17" thick. It does
have an integrated optical drive, but 4.5 pounds is a little on the
heavy side for a 12.1" Tablet. The palm rest has a soft rubber like
matting, which is comfortable when typing and prevents any greasy
fingerprint issues. It converts to Tablet mode with ease, with the
ability to swivel in two directions, and locks into place for
stability. Overall the entire design is solid and the chassis is
sturdy, so there is no cheap feel to this Tablet. Gateway E-155C Thin and Light Convertible Tablet PC Review Linked by LT Hacker

    The Secrets of Laptop Encryption

To maximize the effectiveness of encryption in providing effective
security assurance solutions, organizations must deploy it as part of a
defense-in-depth security stance. Like any technology, encryption is
plagued with pitfalls, mistakes, and traps that could easily provide an
organization with a false sense of confidence in its security, while
still allowing attackers to easily compromise the organization’s
data. The common pitfalls, mistakes, and traps that an organization
    implementing encryption must avoid are:

    • Algorithm Management

    • Key Length

    • Key Recovery

    • Scope of Protection

    THE CHALLENGES OF ALGORITHM MANAGEMENT

The general mathematics behind an encryption algorithm is fairly
straightforward. At first glance, writing algorithms seems to be very
easy to do. In reality, writing secure algorithms is extremely
difficult. The details of how the algorithm is assembled play an
    important role in its effectiveness.

Differential crypt analysis was first discovered in the mid-1990s as a
method for cracking symmetric Key algorithms very quickly. Early on,
the difference between algorithms that could be broken and algorithms
that were secure was how the data was broken up prior to encryption.
Something as simple as how the data is put into blocks determined
whether an algorithm was secure. The Secrets of Laptop Encryption Linked by LT Hacker

    Everex StepNote XT5000T Review

he black on black lid (with a chrome accent strip) gives this machine a
rather generic look, and the one third silver/two thirds black keyboard
deck is not the pinnacle of ergonomics. In fact, the keyboard layout is
unacceptable for a machine this size. While the letter keys are full
sized and comfortable, some ancillary keys including oft used Enter,
Shift, and the period key are shrunken to accommodate a dedicated
number pad (that you'll probably never use). Also, the plastic chrome
mouse buttons felt cheap and were very loud.

Another cost-saver comes in the LCD panel: The 17-inch widescreen is
bright enough, but the resolution (1440 x 900 pixels) is low for this
class. Still, text in applications was crisp and legible, and DVD
playback looked fine. Since there is no high-def optical drive option
(a dual-layer multi-format DVD burner is standard), you probably won't
miss the HD screen. On the plus side, the deck-mounted speakers
delivered decent sound quality, and you get a 100GB hard drive. Everex StepNote XT5000T Review by LAPTOP Magazine Linked by LT Hacker

    Alienware Area 51 m9750 Review

Available at launch in either black or white (more
color choices will follow), the 9.5 pound m9750 uses the same chassis
as the m9700, complete with ribbed lid and glowing silver alien head.
The 17.1 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel widescreen is one of the glossier ones
we've seen and is prone to reflection in bright environments. (But who
games with the lights on, right?)

Alienware offers a Blu-ray drive option to put the gorgeous screen (and
Nvidia Purevideo HD technology) to work. The display can handle full
1080p HD resolution, and high-def movies showed visual pop and
excellent detail in shadow areas. The screen's good viewing-angle
performance makes the m9750 ideal to share (again, just watch for
reflections from lights and windows). Sound quality from the 2.1 sound
system was better than what most laptops deliver, and volume was
adequate. However, we recommend adding a set of powered speakers for
maximizing your gaming or movie-watching pleasure. Alienware Area-51 m9750 Review by LAPTOP Magazine Linked by LT Hacker

    Review: Samsung R20

When it comes to notebooks, Samsung may be overshadowed by some of the
larger far east manufacturers but we've been impressed with almost all
the machines they've released of late. The Samsung R20 is another great
machine that manages to mix portability with a price that can't really
    be ignored.

At £550 (inc. VAT), it offers fantastic value for money, as it
comes with the latest specification comprising an Intel Core 2 Duo
    T2250, which runs at 1.73GHz.

This chip may not be the fastest in the range but it’s a
dual-core chip that packs plenty of power. It’s paired with
1024MB of memory, which really helps things tick over nicely. Overall,
we found that it handled everything we threw at it with a certain
degree of style. You can seriously multi-task on the notebook and not
see any significant slow down. Samsung R20 laptop Review - Pocket-lint.co.uk Linked by LT Hacker

    Fujitsu LifeBook S2210 Review

With nearly every laptop manufacturer having abandoned standard-aspect
displays for the roomier widescreen format, it's a bit of a shock to
see a square-shaped screen these days. And yet here comes the Fujitsu
LifeBook S2210's boxy 13.3-inch display, which joins a few ThinkPads in
making a final stand for this dying breed. While that's not enough to
dismiss the S2210 outright, its fine array of components and features
don't compensate for the short battery life.

Weighing in at four pounds, the S2210 is light enough to carry all day,
and it feels like it can last a long time. Measuring 11.5 x 9.4 x 1.3
inches, it runs slightly narrower than most contemporary widescreen
thin-and-lights. When the lid is open, however, the system is nearly
two inches taller than its widescreen rivals, which will make it more
difficult to use on an airplane tray table.

The S2210's keyboard is mediocre; the keys are full-sized but felt
somewhat cramped and not as firm as we'd like. The touchpad is of
adequate size, however, and the biometric fingerprint sensor between
the mouse buttons doubles as a vertical scroll button for quickly
navigating through documents and Web pages. Fujitsu LifeBook S2210 Review by LAPTOP Magazine Linked by LT Hacker

    Review: HP Compaq nx7300

The HP NX series laptops all have very similar designs. The lid is a
dark gray with the staple HP logo in the middle, the rest of the laptop
is black. I personally like the look; it’s simple,
modern-looking, and professional. Black never goes out of style, just
ask Steve Jobs. The lid is built solidly, there is no looseness when
you open or close the lid. I can press hard on it with no ripples on
    the screen.

    I chose the 1280 x 800 Brightview display (glossy). Don’t buy
this laptop and expect too much from the screen, because you might be
disappointed. But if you have realistic expectations about what a
budget laptop can get you, you’ll be satisfied. Viewing angles
are satisfactory but colors warp when you’re viewing off angle by
just a bit. HP Compaq nx7300 Review Linked by LT Hacker
