TiVo, Amazon to sell movies straight to TV sets

TiVo on Tuesday said many of its customers can now order
pay-per-view movies and television shows from Amazon.com's download
service directly from their TV, without a personal computer.

TiVo upgraded the "Amazon Unbox on TiVo" service to allow customers
with high-speed Internet connections to select one of about 10,000
movies, shows or other video, using the TiVo remote control.

The programs, priced on average at about $4 for a movie rental and
about $2 for a television show, will be viewable after it downloads to
the TiVo set-top box.

Amazon and TiVo first announced the service in February, and at that time required users to select the video on a PC.

For TiVo, Unbox adds another feature that differentiates its
video-recording technology from generic digital video recorders offered
by cable and satellite providers.

The service comes as media and technology companies seek new ways to court viewers who split their time between viewing traditional media, surfing the Internet and playing video games.

By going directly to the TV, Amazon's TiVo partnership takes downloads a step further than online video stores like those of Wal-Mart Stores and Apple, which are geared toward PCs or portable devices.

Xbox Live adds Disney movies to its download menu

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft announced the addition of Walt Disney films to the Xbox 360's download service, Xbox Live, on Tuesday night at the opening news conference for the E3 Media and Business Summit.

Disney joins the ranks of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate among studios contributing high-definition titles to the fast-growing platform. Among the 35 titles that will be made available beginning Tuesday are Bridge to Terabithia, The Queen and Deja Vu.

"This is a big endorsement for us," Robbie Bach, president of the entertainment and devices division at Microsoft, said in an interview preceding the news conference. "With this partner, we have 28 TV and movie studios on Xbox Live."

Xbox still has some catching up to do in the Disney department compared with Apple's iTunes, which has a broader array of Disney films on tap as well as bigger titles, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. That might have something to do with tight ties between Apple and Disney's Pixar.

Bach reported robust numbers for Xbox Live, which recently surpassed 7 million members. He projected reaching 10 million by this time next year.

Contrary to expectations that Microsoft would lower the price of Xbox in response to a similar move made this week by Sony for its PlayStation 3 console, Bach did not announce such a move but didn't rule it out as an option.

"July is the worst month to do something like that," he said. "It's the slowest time in every market in the world. We'll decide what we'll do in the future when we get there."

Bach sought to bolster Xbox's image in the wake of a disclosure this week that Microsoft would spend more than $1 billion to repair technical problems experienced by some owners of the console as well as extend warranties.

He noted that 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold, 5.6 million in the U.S. In addition, Bach said that Xbox owners buy more games per console than owners of Nintendo or Sony devices. "When you look at the dollars spent on the consoles, we're dramatically ahead of our individual competitors," he said. "That's important for the marketplace because more publishers will want to develop more games."

Bach also touted Xbox's competitive advantage for the 2007 holiday season, noting that Microsoft will have the only console that can service the probable three biggest sellers out at that time: Halo 3, Madden NFL 08 and Grand Theft Auto IV.

"We think we have the best lineup of games in history," Bach said.

While Xbox has established itself as a console of choice for hardcore gamers, Bach signaled that Microsoft will take several steps to make it more accessible to a broader audience, including a set of new casual games for Xbox Live Arcade and a deal with DVD game brand Scene It? that will bring a customized new controller to the console.

Pay-for-blogging site raises questions

The controversy around a young Web site called Associated Content boils down to perspective.

Does
it exist to game Google search results and generate revenue through
Google's AdWords advertising service by displaying contextual ads next
to the copy? Or is it a new kind of media site, chock-full of original
articles written mostly by average folk about everything from
presidential pardons and karaoke to smoker's guilt and ventriloquism?

Add
to the mix at Associated Content two prominent board members--Tim
Armstrong, head of advertising for Google in North America, and venture
capitalist Eric Hippeau, a managing partner at SoftBank Capital, who
also happens to serve on Yahoo's board of directors--and you have a little company that's drawing outsized and quite possibly unwanted attention.

But while there are plenty of questions about this start-up, no one seems to be able to say it's actually doing anything wrong.

"This kind of service is not entirely clear-cut," said Danny Sullivan, editor of the Search Engine Land blog. "It's not a case that they are bad or should be banned, but they are embroiled in this kind of a debate."

Denver-based Associated Content
was formed in 2004 and received $5.4 million in funding from SoftBank.
It bills itself as a "user-driven information portal" and content
provider, licensing content to other online publishers. The articles
are "optimized for discovery and revenue generation," according to a
news release on the company Web site. In other words, they're designed
to be easy to find on Google through various search optimization techniques used by many publishers, not just people accused of gaming search results.

The
company asks bloggers to write on the subjects of their choosing and
accepts text, video and audio. Contributors can be paid based on the
quality of the article and keyword optimization.

In most
ways, Associated Content's methods seem fitting for any typical Web
site--do your best to get play on Google search results and make money
off its advertising. In fact, Associated Content is hardly the only
company churning out content to match with Google ads. The success of
Google's AdSense program, which matches ads with content on Web sites,
and the growth of blogging applications have led to the emergence of
pay-for-blogging companies that help match willing writers with sites
that want content.

What
separates legitimate content marketplaces from so-called "Made for
AdSense" companies that generate content purely for marketing purposes
is the intent of the company and the quality of the articles, said Rand
Fishkin, co-founder and chief executive of search marketing firm SEOmoz.

That
gets closer to the heart of the controversy. The dividing line between
people who don't have a problem with Associated Content and those who
do seems to come down to one of the most hard-to-define aspects of a
Web site: quality. And quality, as most people know, is terribly
difficult to define. As the 20th-century U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said in declining to venture too far into a definition of pornography: "I know it when I see it."

The
complaint is that much of the content coming out of some of these
pay-for-blogging sites is lousy because it's designed more for ranking
higher in search engines than to inform or educate readers. Associated
Content was taken to task for that in an article headlined "Bottom
Slurping for Google Juice," on the Clickz news site.

Search Engine Land's Sullivan followed up on his blog,
suggesting that Associated Content could be contributing to the
"pollution" of search engine results and "manipulating Google's
rankings" by using, for instance, repetitive hyperlinks from the same
word within an article to another page on the site.

"Some
people just want to make money off AdSense and they just need content,
so they'll effectively freelance stuff from authors. It gets into these
gray areas," Sullivan said in a recent interview. "The only issue with
Associated Content is they've got a Google executive on the board.
Because the company is in this gray area it becomes an issue for them.
What they are doing isn't wrong, but it is subject to debate."

"The
key issue here is you've got someone directly involved in Google's
revenue generation also involved in a company that is taking advantage
of ways to generate revenue from Google," said Andy Beal, founder of
Internet marketing consultancy and blog Marketing Pilgrim. "That's the conflict."

U.K. commissioner blames CEOs for data breaches

The United Kingdom's information commissioner is calling on chief
executives to take the security of customer and staff information more
seriously.

"The roll call of banks, retailers, government
departments, public bodies and other organizations which have admitted
serious security lapses is frankly horrifying," Richard Thomas
wrote in a report. "How can laptops holding details of customer
accounts be used away from the office without strong encryption? How
can millions of store card transactions fall into the wrong hands?"

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) received almost
24,000 inquiries and complaints concerning personal information, and it
prosecuted 16 individuals and organizations in the past 12 months,
according to its annual report for 2006 and 2007.

"My message to those at the top of organizations is to respect the
privacy of individuals and the integrity of the information held about
them, to embrace data protection positively, and to be sure you are not
the business or political leader who failed to take information rights
seriously," Thomas said.

The ICO received complaints under both the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act.

More than half of Data Protection Act cases required the ICO to simply
provide advice and guidance, while a breach was likely to have happened
in more than a third of cases, of which a further 77 percent resulted
in remedial actions such as correcting an individual's record or
training staff.

The ICO received almost 6,000 complaints under the Freedom of Information Act and has closed more than three-fourths of those.

Public awareness of data protection rights has increased to 82 percent,
with more people understanding that personal information must be
handled appropriately, according to the report.

The information commissioner's plea follows a number of
security breaches over the last year, including 12 U.K. banks found to
be in breach of the Data Protection Act, following complaints about the
disposal of customer information.

U.K. bank Barclays is facing an ICO investigation over
allegations of customer privacy breaches, and telecommunications
provider Orange and retailer Littlewoods were also found to be in
breach of the Data Protection Act by the ICO this year.

Gemma Simpson of Silicon.com reported from London.

At E3, entertainment is the name of the game

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--The major game-console makers at this year's
E3 Media and Business Summit had a similar message: it's not gaming,
it's entertainment.

Of course, the three
companies--Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony--were all eager to highlight
their successes and differentiate themselves from their rivals.
Nintendo is at the top of the heap this year after the wild and
serendipitous rise of its Wii console, a status exemplified by Nintendo
America President and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime's onstage declaration, "My
name is Reggie, and I'm happy."

But beyond that, the "Big
3" at E3 were all about the "E" word. All three presentations stressed
a common goal of establishing video games as a form of entertainment
that's unquestionably on a par with television or film. As a
result--despite the fact that the revamped E3 is smaller, quieter and
more exclusive than its massive predecessor--there was nothing low key
about the console companies' presentations. With massive video screens,
surround sound and fancy lighting, the atmosphere had the feel of a
movie premiere. Game previews, with their emphasis on action and
storyline, were virtually indistinguishable from film trailers.

The
exception was Nintendo, which spent nearly as much time running
third-party clips about the Wii and the DS Lite--from news reports to
YouTube videos to The Colbert Report and South Park--as
it did showing off new games. It's notable, because not only does the
Wii have the cultural impact factor and the potential for
visual-friendly imagery of people swinging "Wiimotes" like tennis
rackets or bowling balls, but it also has the disadvantage of lower-end
graphics that just aren't as eye-catching on a big screen as the Xbox
360 or PlayStation 3.

"Looking
back, E3 here in 2007 may well be seen as a coming-out party for an
entire industry," Nintendo's Fils-Aime said in his speech, "the moment
that it became finally clear that video games would take their place
alongside TV, music and movies as a staple of leisure entertainment."

Peter Moore, Microsoft's corporate vice president of
interactive entertainment, highlighted statistics from
PricewaterhouseCoopers that predicted the gaming industry would surpass
the music industry in the amount of cash raked in this year.

Additionally,
focusing on the entertainment factor was one thing that the companies
could use to get the attendees excited. It was a bit of a catch-22 for
the console manufacturers: the "new E3" was supposed to cut down on the
glitz factor, but at the same time, it was clear that the likes of
Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo needed to use some smoke and mirrors
(literally) to mask the fact that there weren't going to be a whole lot
of shocking moments.

The vast majority of games had already
been announced and many had been previously demonstrated, and hardware
announcements were minor. Sony made some improvements to its PlayStation Portable, trimming down its size, improving its video quality and battery life, and touting the Darth Vader-emblazoned Star Wars edition; Microsoft unveiled a new Halo 3-themed Xbox 360 and a special new controller for casual games like Scene-It; and Nintendo introduced some new Wii accessories like a zapper gun, an exercise balance board, and a steering wheel.

It
probably won't be clear until the end of the week whether the
eye-catching game trailers and lavish demonstrations like Microsoft's
smoke-machine-laden debut of the Rock Band
will have been enough to keep jaded press members and analysts at bay,
but Microsoft executive Peter Moore's "rendition" of the Hives' Main Offender on the new music game certainly elicited some laughs.

Gaming can be social

Aside from entertainment, the three press events shared two more-common
buzzwords: connectivity and versatility. The companies highlighted
their individual online hubs--Microsoft's Xbox Live, Sony's PlayStation
Network and Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console--as responsible for breaking
video gaming out of its solitary shell and making it a legitimately
social experience. Sony spent a significant amount of time highlighting
the "Home" virtual world associated with the PlayStation 3, with Sony
Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton using his
Home avatar rather than a physical appearance to greet the audience
(though he did walk onstage several minutes later). Nintendo announced
a new "channel" for the Wii completely devoted to players' "Mii"
avatars, which have become a phenomenon themselves.

Microsoft
doesn't have any kind of formal social network associated with the Xbox
360, but the company instead touted the sheer volume of its Xbox Live
network. "This is the largest community connected to the television,"
said Jeff Bell, Microsoft's corporate vice president of global
marketing. "Last year at E3 we said that Xbox Live would grow to 6
million members by now," he said, noting that it proceeded to hit 7
million. "We've added a new member every eight seconds. This community
continues to grow, and before next year's E3, we're forecasting that we
will cross the 10 million member mark."

Then
there's versatility. All three companies cited examples of how their
consoles can be used as living room media centers rather than just
gaming devices: Sony showed off the American Idol-like game SingStar,
coming to U.S. markets for the first time on the PlayStation 3, and
repeatedly emphasized the Blu-ray player built into the console.
Nintendo, following in the success of its Wii Sports game suite, demonstrated Wii Fit,
which deviates even more from the gaming norm by using the console for
aerobics, yoga and even posture improvement games. Microsoft catered
more to the couch potato demographic with its announcement that select
movies from Disney will be available for purchase through its Xbox Live
Marketplace download service, and hyped its new version of the popular
movie trivia game Scene-It, previously available only as a DVD game.

There was still plenty of catering toward the hard-core audience, especially at Microsoft's Halo-heavy
event. But it was clear that expanding the consoles' functionality to
encompass everything like movies, karaoke and even fitness has been a
hot priority for all three companies since their launch. The video game
industry obviously does want to achieve the privileged status--and it's
getting there--of being considered alongside movies and television as a
mainstay of entertainment, art and culture.

But there's
also the simple drive to maximize profit. The more versatile a pricey
video game console is, more consumers, particularly those who don't
consider themselves "gamers" in the traditional sense," will be more
likely to consider forking over the cash for one.

Interpol chief wants databases to track criminals

SAN FRANCISCO--The head of Interpol believes terrorists and other
criminals are traveling freely around the globe in ways that police
agencies find difficult to track, but he says he knows how to cripple
their movements.

Interpol
Secretary General Ronald Noble on Wednesday suggested two solutions:
first, airlines should forward passenger data on international flights
to Interpol; and second, nations that arrest foreign visitors should
share those fingerprints with the international police agency as well.

Noble,
who is meeting on Thursday with American Airlines to discuss the
proposal as a pilot project, said linking databases can help detect
people flying on passports reported as lost or stolen. Ramzi Yousef,
who was convicted of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, entered the United States carrying a stolen Iraqi passport.

"The goal is to test something, to pilot something, to have all
airlines participate in it," Noble said in an interview at CNET
News.com's headquarters here. "We're a global organization, but it's a
question of who's going to (pay for it) and go first."

Eventually, he envisions expanding the database to
encompass other forms of travel, including trains, ocean liners and
cruise ships. "It could be needed for any international travel
requiring a passport where reservations are made," said Noble, a former
New York University law professor and Clinton administration official
in the U.S. Treasury Department.

The pilot
project would gather only passport numbers and the country that issued
the passport, and not individual names or other details. (American
Airlines did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.)

The federal government has worried about fraudulent
travel documents in the hands of terrorists, especially when those
passports are issued by countries whose citizens can enter the United
States without a visa. In May, the Department of Homeland Security
announced it would begin using Interpol's database of 7 million lost or
stolen passports to screen foreign travelers. The U.S. began reporting
its own lost or stolen passports to Interpol in 2004.

Airlines on U.S.-bound flights originating abroad
already submit what's known as Advance Passenger Information System
data--including names and passport numbers--to Homeland Security before
the flight lands. Federal agents compare that information with data in
a Treasury Department computer system
that includes wanted persons, violent felons, suspected terrorists and
international fugitives. Agents can mark passengers for more intensive
screening that takes place when they go through immigration.

But there is no centralized international database of
passports used in travel, which Noble said could eventually be expanded
to track fugitives and people such as sex offenders who may be barred
from traveling to certain countries known for sex tourism as part of
their probation. "I believe that a country has a right to know where
its passport goes," he said. "Wherever a country wants to track the
passport, as long as its laws allow it, and it doesn't violate
(Interpol's) constitution, we're prepared to support it."

Important details of any pilot project remain murky, including privacy
concerns and the question of which nations could access the central
repository of passport data. Noble did suggest that the numbers would
be accessible only to the nation that issued the passport in the first
place--meaning the United States could track its own citizens but not,
say, Iranians.

Privacy advocates said they wanted more details about
a pilot project, but expressed concern that data-sharing with Interpol
could bypass U.S. privacy laws.

"If DHS held this data, it would be subject to Privacy
Act safeguards," such as notice to the public, the right to access, and
the right to correct misinformation, said Marcia Hofmann, an Electronic Frontier Foundation staff attorney who has filed a lawsuit against Homeland Security to obtain information about a passenger profiling system.

"But if it's Interpol," Hofmann said, "that's an international organization and it's not subject to the same Privacy Act obligations that a United States agency would be."

Interpol is not alone: a few days after failed car bomb attacks in
London and in Glasgow, Franco Frattini, the European Union's justice
commissioner, announced plans for more aggressive data collection on
air travelers. Frattini said last week
that he was drawing up a plan that would let member nations collect and
share data from air passengers in much the same way as the United
States already does through what are called Passenger Name Records. (A U.S.-European Union dispute over the use of those records was recently resolved.)

Global DNA, fingerprint databases?

In the interview on Wednesday, Noble also outlined his plans for
national police forces to share more fingerprint and DNA data with
Interpol.

"All non-nationals that are arrested should have their
fingerprints sent to Interpol and run against its database," Noble
said. That rule would include tourists, H-1B visa holders and even
permanent residents with green cards who are arrested.

When asked whether U.S. citizens who are arrested
should be included as well, Noble replied: "The data would overwhelm
Interpol, and from a political perspective, the likelihood that a
country would accept sending the criminal information of a U.S. citizen
to Interpol, I'm not sure if that's politically viable or even
advisable."

In the U.S., the FBI's Combined DNA Index System
includes more than 4.7 million DNA profiles, including 178,000 that
were taken from crime scenes. Nearly all of the rest comes from
convicted criminals.

A 2000 federal law called the DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination Act
requires that DNA samples be taken from anyone convicted of or on
probation for certain serious crimes. This was challenged in court on
Fourth and Fifth Amendment grounds, but a federal appeals court upheld (PDF) the DNA collection requirement as constitutional.

A DNA-sharing network linking all G8 nations--meaning Canada, France,
Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United
States--was activated last week, Noble said. It already includes about
65,000 to 70,000 DNA profiles, mostly from crime scenes, and nations
can send DNA samples with or without names attached, he said.

In addition, Noble said, nations should work through
Interpol to create "a global database of convicted terrorists." He has
also recently criticized Britain for failing to check immigrants against Interpol's list of suspected terrorists, and said in an open letter
that "no country should take the risk of allowing travelers to cross
its borders without having their passports checked" against Interpol's
files.

Cheeky China company suing Google over name

A Chinese company is suing Google's China subsidiary for copying its name, saying the U.S. search engine's registered Chinese name is too similar to its own and has harmed its operations.

A spokesman for Beijing Guge Science and Technology said similarities between its name and Google's commercial name have created confusion among people who, in trying to contact the search engine, mistakenly call Beijing Guge's office and disrupt work there.

"We just want Google to change their commercial name," Tian Yunshan, a company official, told Reuters on Friday. "We have already passed our demands on to Google ... We will see what happens in court."

The search engine's Chinese name--a transliteration of the English word "Google"--was also used in Beijing Guge's commercially registered name, Tian said.

People searching for Google through a local telephone directory assistance service were invariably directed to Beijing Guge because the search engine was not listed, Tian explained.

The case had been accepted by a court in Beijing's Haidian district, the Beijing News reported. It was not immediately clear if the case has any chance of success.

Tian declined to comment on Beijing Guge's operations or its products or services, saying it was "not convenient" to disclose such details.

A Google representative contacted by telephone declined to confirm the lawsuit and said she was unable to provide immediate comment.

Mmm, mobile: 'Simpsons' goes cellular

Homer and Marge Simpson have taken the mobile plunge.

Through a collaboration between News Corp.-owned Fox Mobile Entertainment and its acquired mobile entertainment company Jamba, fans of Fox's The Simpsons
can now purchase ringtones, voicetones, wallpapers and screensavers
based on the series just in time for the July 27 release of The Simpsons Movie.

Mobile products based on the series will be offered through a single brand subscription dubbed the Yellow Plan, the first mobile subscription plan built around one brand. At $9.99 a month, subscribers can make use of six "credits" to purchase content.

The show's writers and actors are involved in the creation of the products devoted to the Simpsons franchise.

"If you look at the fan site and the blogs, there's such a hunger for Simpsons
content, and we thought people wanted a closer connection where you can
subscribe and get special exclusive stuff created for you by the
creators of The Simpsons," Jamba CEO Lucy Hood said. "This Jamba venture offers content in 35 countries and five continents. The Simpsons will be out across that universe."

Ringtones will include classic Simpsons lines like "Woo-hoo!" and "Mmm ... doughnuts." Musical ringtones also will be available, among them a jazz version of The Simpsons theme song. New content will be available every month.

Additionally, Yellow Plan subscribers will have access to The Simpsons: Minutes to Meltdown, a mobile game created by Electronic Arts.

The subscription plan is available through all carriers, but the mobile
game will not be supported on Verizon or Virgin Mobile carriers at
    launch.

Louis is known as the "Gateway to the West", but don't go West just
yet, because you'll want to see what this beautiful city has to offer
first. St. Louis is known for it's famed professional sports teams,
it's signature style tastes, and it's Blues music heritage. If your
heading to this metropolis on the Mississippi, then be prepared to have
some fun!

If your into baseball, then you'll want to check out the St. Louis
Cardinals. The Cardinals play at brand new Busch Stadium, which was
opened in 2006. The park has a modern/rustic feel and look to it. It's
outside appearance is one of red brick and black steel girders, that
mimic some of the city's area bridges. Once your inside the park,
you'll instantly notice the gorgeous view of downtown in centerfield.
As far as the team, the Cardinals have achieved fifteen National League
pennants, which have led to nine World Series championships. The
freindly fans are some of the most loyal in all of baseball so your
sure to get into some great baseball conversation.

After a day at the ball park, you'll want to indulge yourself in some
St. Louis style cuisine. If your feeling fancy and want to trade your
baseball cap in for romantic white linen tables, then the Top of the
Riverfront is for you. Located on the 28th floor of the Millennium
Hotel, this five star revolving restaurant offers spectacular panoramic
views of the city. Except for an exceptional Sunday Brunch, this
restaurant is only open for dinner, so the menu is limited. There are
great choices including various steak and fish entries. If your looking
to dine somwhere a little less fancy, than how about feasting on some
St. Louis style BBQ. Located seven miles from the downtown area, Ropers
Ribs has some of the best BBQ in the area. Their inexpensive menu
includes tantalizing jumbo fried shrimp, giant rib tips, baby back
ribs, and of course, St. Louis style ribs. The dining area is small but
the food is highly rated by many!

If your a music fan, then St. Louis will make your ears twitch with
glee. St. Louis has long been known for it's Blues heritage and has put
out such talent an Tina Turner, Gretchen Wilson, and Nelly. Many big
names such as these, can be seen at various venues in and around St.
Louis, such as the Fabulous Fox Theatre, the Scottrade Center, and the
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. If your not into large crowded venues
then you may want to check one of the many Blues clubs. A fan favorite
is the Broadway Oyster Bar. Located just a short walk from Busch
Stadium, this club offers a variety of Cajun and Blues bands and the
place is always hopping. There is an outdoor patio and Monday nights,
the Blue Oyster offers a variety of distinct Soulard Blues bands, a
sound that is synonomous with St. Louis Blues.

These are just a few of the things that you can do in this fabulous
city, and whether your a sports addict, a food critic, or have a music
fetish, St. Louis is sure to satisfy your expectations of entertainment.

If you have any further questions about places to dine or events to see, feel free to contact myself or my office.
